About
Zoe Zhang (b.2001, Chongqing, China) works at the intersection of Anthropology and multi-media Art. Recently graduated from the University of Rochester with double degrees in Anthropology(Honors) and Studio Arts, Zoe’s artworks have been shown in the ASIS Gallery and Harnett Gallery. Zoe often begins her creative process by documenting her surroundings and expanding her repertoire of artistic techniques at local artisans’ studios, museums, and day communities. Her methodology in ethnographic studies aims to understand better and represent the local communities, thus contributing to the emic perspectives involved in topics ranging from the space, sensory politics, emotion-based governence, care, performance and infrastructure. The primary and archival source materials collected at fields serve as Zoe’s pivotal inspirations to trace the sociocultural and political underpinnings behind the cultural (dis)continuity of (im)materiality. Her interdisciplinary practice enables her to express her sociocultural imagination through academic papers and visualized artworks.
Artist Statement
In my interpretation of Visual Anthropology, I mainly work with photography, films (both experimental and documentary), installation, and book-making. These mediums avail me the opportunity to incorporate varying interpretations between intangible and tangible forms that reflect certain cultural narratives.
working with materials like bamboo, plaster, and fabrics, I aim to bring 2D documentary into 3D forms so that the audience can feel, hear, and touch underrepresented folklore art practices. Revolving around my research interest in the rural East Asia, I aim to spotlight the voices of grassroots communities in preserving cultural heritage, and prompt reflection upon the invisible institutional forces that shape the cultural practies from the past to the present.
