上海:

Un-Gentrified Neighborhood

Modernization and urbanization have become the driving forces in the past three decades that have reshaped the original landscape of Shanghai, China, to materialize the economic prosperity and embracement of foreign cultures. Meanwhile, achieving such an urban landscape is at an undeniable social cost due to resettlement and gentrification. For instance, dislocation disconnects people from their historically formed sense of place and place-based collective memory. During my 6-month residence in Shanghai in 2021, I documented the not-yet-compromised neighborhoods through still photographs.
